The Dallas Cowboys have officially used their franchise tag on Dalton Schultz after a career-best year. By using the franchise tag on their tight end, Dallas has allowed themselves an extra four months to agree on a deal with Schultz. If they fail within this time, the franchise tender for tight ends is $10.93 million.

Despite being $22 million over the cap, Dallas did not want to lose their starting tight end. Schultz is coming off a career-best season with 78 receptions, 808 yards, and eight touchdowns. He stepped into the starting role after Blake Jarwin fell to injuries again. Since then, Schultz has proven to be a solid blocker, pass catcher, and overall weapon for this Cowboys offense.

What Does This Mean?

Even while under the tag, a team can come in and sign Schultz. However, any team would have to give up a lot to entice the Cowboys to consider letting go of a prized asset. Only two players have played under the franchise tag for the Dallas Cowboys, teammates Dak Prescott and DeMarcus Lawrence. Both of them got long-term and lucrative deals after playing under the tag for a season. The two parties now have until the 15th of July to agree on a deal. With Schultz getting $11 million under the tag, the big decision now is how much his long-term deal would be and that will be important.

Signing Schultz Is Important

The former fourth-round pick seems set to agree on a deal and not join the small list of players playing under the tag. Should Schultz sign a long-term deal, he would likely step into the starting role over guys like Blake Jarwin. Schultz is a high-value asset for Dallas and this deal should be a top priority. He was a key producer on offense and has proven himself time and again. Schultz has earned a long-term deal but at the same time, it should not be a deal that breaks the bank.
