The amount of free-agent signings today has been insane. Dallas inked wide receiver Michael Gallup to a long-term deal yesterday and now DeMarcus Lawrence today. Lawrence and the Cowboys have agreed to a three-year, $40 million deal with $30 million guaranteed. A deal with Lawrence keeps the Cowboys’ defensive line somewhat intact.

Why Signing Lawrence Is Important

DeMarcus Lawrence is a two-time Pro Bowler and has tallied 48.5 sacks in his career with Dallas. He also has 17 forced fumbles and 74 tackles for loss. His best season was in 2017 when he recorded 14.5 sacks and four forced fumbles. Lawrence is the heart and soul of the defensive line and maybe even the defense. He has been a big piece of the Dallas defense for his entire career.

Re-signing Lawrence had to be a top priority and the deal is done. After losing Amari Cooper, Dallas needed to re-sign big names. The signing of Lawrence locks up at least one defensive star and the singing of Gallup takes care of the offensive star. Lawrence is worth every penny and clearly, Dallas believes he will return to his true form after dealing with injuries last season.

Busy Cowboys Front Office

The signing of Lawrence is just one piece of the puzzle. They signed Gallup and Lawrence but the next move will be soon. Dallas is reportedly close to releasing veteran offensive lineman La’el Collins after failing to find a trade partner. Dallas is still heavily pushing for more cap space and that is the focus right now. Re-sign the big names that fit long-term and move on from players that hurt their cap money.

Hopefully, the moves for Gallup and Lawrence are the start of more smart moves. Dallas has some gaps in the roster that need to be filled. But for now, the need for defensive end and wide receiver is somewhat filled. Dallas needs to be ready to fill the hole left by Amari Cooper as well as potential defensive spots and O-line spots.
